Sid Caesar, the legend who pioneered TV comedy in the 1950s, has died at the age of 91, The Associated Press and ABC News reported.

Caesar became one of television's first stars when he hosted "Your Show of Shows."

Some of the writers who helped make the content he delivered inluded Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen and Neil Simon, Variety reported.

Caesar died in his Los Angeles-area home after a brief illness, family spokesman Eddy Friedfeld told The Associated Press.

"He had not been well for a while. He was getting weak," said Friedfeld, who lives in New York and said he last spoke to Caesar about 10 days ago.

Reiner told the AP that Caesar had an ability to "connect with an audience and make them roar with laughter."
