LOS MOLINOS, Calif. -

A crash on Highway 99 in Los Molinos near Sherman Street killed a young boy and seriously injured his mother.

According to the CHP, Katie Ramsey, 31, of Gerber was driving a Nissan Maxima southbound on Highway 99 when she stopped to make a left turn.

Officers say a truck towing a horse trailer driven by Tyler Burrone, 21, of Fort Jones could not slow down in time, and pushed Ramsey's car into the northbound lane, where it was hit by a big rig driven by Roderick Abbott, 56, of Medford, Oregon.

The Nissan immediately burst into flames, but was quickly extinguished.

Ramsey suffered major injuries in the crash and was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center. Her son, Gunner Langenderfer, 5, was killed.

Neither Burrone nor Abbott were seriously hurt.

Caltrans responded to the crash with a statement saying that they have no current plans to construct a left turn pocket on Highway 99 at Sherman Street, at the scene of the accident.

"There are numerous criteria that must be met when considering intersection improvements," said Trisha Coder, Public Information Officer for Caltrans District 2. "These include the accident rate, how much traffic flows through that area, how much opposing traffic there is and how many left turns are made at that location."

Coder went on to say that because of the recent accident, Caltrans will look at the location, review the current conditions and determine if improvements can be made.

"It is important to note that the specific circumstances of this accident must be determined and considered in any analysis that may result in modifying the intersection,” Coder said.
