Highway 70 re-opens after fatal big rig crash in Butte County
BELDEN, Calif. -

Highway 70 was closed for almost nine hours Tuesday after a fatal big rig crash in the foothills of eastern Butte County.  The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. and the highway was re-opened around noon.

The closure allowed crews to repair the pavement after the early morning crash and fire.

According to a news release from Caltrans, the crash happened near Chambers Creek, four miles southwest of Belden.

The CHP said a 2003 Freightliner truck hit a large rock in the road.  The truck jack-knived and ruptured a fuel tank.  Both the tractor and trailer became fully engulfed in flames.  The driver was unable to get out and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The name of the driver has not been released.

The fire resulted in damage to the road.
