"I don't know what would drive him to do such a thing," said Frank Oddo, the Oroville father of a 16-year-old son of the same name. "My son doesn't smoke pot, he doesn't drink, he's a good kid."
But his son, 16-year-old Frank Oddo, along with 17-year-old Jessy Murray and 17-year-old Jacob Cadena are accused of hatching a kidnapping and murder plot designed to get rid of a girl's boyfriend. On Saturday, authorities say the three boys met the boyfriend at a remote location near Marysville under the guise of a marijuana deal.
"They had instigated a plan to kidnap the 17 year old, to take him to another rural, isolated area, to sodomize him, to cut him, cut his Achilles tendons and we believe ultimately then kill him," said Yuba County District Attorney Patrick McGrath.
With the boyfriend out of the way, deputies say Cadena would use the victim's cellphone, pose as the boyfriend, break up with the girl and then try to win her over by consoling her. But the victim became suspicious, called a relative, who showed up and called police, but not before the three boys -- allegedly brandishing machetes and an air-soft weapon -- shoved him in Cadena's car. The boys were caught and taken to Yuba County Juvenile Hall, where Oddo's father has visited and spoken with his son.
"He said he's sorry," Oddo said. "I asked him, 'What were you thinking? How did you think this was going to end?' He said, 'I don't know. We were just going to tie him up and leave him in the boonies so he could get loose and get away.'"

Mr. Oddo believes his son and Murray were pressured by Cadena to help him in the scheme. All three will be tried as adults and face charges of kidnapping, kidnapping to commit extortion and kidnapping with the intent of sexual assault.
All three have pleaded not guilty.
