Fire investigators believe two fires in Butte County could be suspicious

Four fires burned over the weekend in Butte County and two of them are being investigated as 'suspicious'.
The fires happened within 10 minutes of each other. One was a vegetation fire and the other was at a church just down the road. Investigators are investigating the cause of the fires because they are concerned it could have been arson.
“We are still trying to determine how [the fires] started and there’s a different possibility for a fire to start and we are trying to narrow them down,” said Battalion Chief Todd Price.
“We are still digging through the evidence and trying to determine exactly how the fire started,” said Price.
One of the fires happened on the corner of Kenilworth and Melvina Avenues where it burned a little more than acre. The other fire was at the Christian Faith Center.
“It was a quick response [to the second fire]. The gentlemen came by and told the fire crew at the church fire [about the second fire] and they made an initial attack on the fire rapidly,” said Price.
According to CAL FIRE investigators, it is the timing that is raising some questions. CAL FIRE said the fire started at around 11:35 p.m. on Saturday and they were able to contain it before it got out of hand. Then, 10 minutes later, another fire broke out just down the street.
“It was odd that we had two fires at the same time. So we are very concerned about that,” said Price.
Crews were able to effectively fight the church fire before it got to the attic of the building.
“There was some damage an entry door and some sheet rock but, in retrospect, minor damage,” said Price. There was, however, enough damage to cancel Sunday services.
Firefighters were not able to find an obvious cause to either fire.
If you know anything about either fire, CAL FIRE urges you to give them a call at (530) 538-6227.
