Fire prompts evacuation of Simpson Univ. library
The library building at Simpson University was evacuated Thursday morning after the smell of smoke filled the building. The smoke came from a furnace motor that caught fire and then ignited the furnace filter, sending smoke through the building's air vents.
University heating and cooling manager Rodney Hauptman said the smoke alarms were triggered around 8:30 a.m. About 200 people were evacuated from the building. Redding Fire Department responded to the campus.
Hauptman traced the source of the smoke to the furnace in the turret of the building. Staff members opened doors and brought in fans to vent the smoke.
Staff members and students returned to the building at 10 a.m.
