CHICO, Calif. -

A Chico State student watched her apartment go up in smoke Tuesday afternoon while at the same time somebody just blocks away broke into her car and stole the last of her belongings.

The student, who university staff call "Nicole" also lost her small dog in the fire.

The blaze started around 12:45p.m. Tuesday and destroyed two apartments in a home broken up into several units.

The Chico State student was at the scene of the fire when somebody broke into her car and stole her backpack, laptop and all of her text books.

"As anyone would imagine, she's is very distressed, a little overwhelmed by having all of that happen in such a short period, grieving not just her personal belongings but of course losing her dog," says Joe Wills, director of public affairs at Chico State. "And yet she's also very appreciative. She's also a little overwhelmed about how many people have stepped up to help."

The campus community has rallied to get her a new laptop and school supplies.

Other people have donated a bike and a shopping trip to Khol's, along with a number of other day-to-day items.

She's currently staying with friends until she figures out her next step.

The focus has now shifted more to monetary donations and if you'd like to help Nicole out you can take support to Kendall Hall Room 110 on the CSU campus or to Stonewall Alliance on 6th Street and Flume Street.

For any questions on how to help Nicole, you can contact the Chico State Office of Student Affairs at (530) 898-6131.
