On Friday Chico firefighters celebrated the life of the department's only firefighter to his life in the line of duty.
Many gathered outside the memorial dedicated to Fire Marshal Ray Head on the 300 block of Broadway in downtown Chico.
Head suffered head injuries during a structure fire in 1970.
He then later died on Valentine's Day at Enloe Medical Center.
Firefighters brought flowers and polished a plaque honoring Head on a rock next to where the fire happened.
"Our family members have the inherent risk of one of us getting killed in action,” said Chico Fire Captain Aaron Lowe. “It's a surreal type of a reminder that it can happen."
Firefighters would also have given Head's widow flowers on this day as well but, she passed away last year.
