Firefighters Honored At Annual Award Ceremony
REDDING, Calif. -

The Exchange Club of Redding gave thanks to firefighters who put their life on the line every single day at the Ninth Annual "Firefighter of the Year" award ceremony.

The event was held during a luncheon at Win-River Casino's Eagle Room on Thursday.

The purpose is to recognize the outstanding contributions firefighters make to the community on a daily basis.

There were 11 honorees from different fire departments throughout Shasta County.

"It's very overwhelming to be recognized by the department and your peers, and to have a wonderful support group within my department," Redding Firefighter Tim Wedan said. "The best part about our job is I can wake up in the morning and never have to say 'I have to go to work.'"

Each honoree received a plaque with their name on it, thanking them for their service.

CAL FIRE Captain Kevin Mancebo said, "There is definitely gratification at the end of the day to see what's been completed whether it's firefighting or project work, there's gratification in the completion."

They also held a moment of silence in memory of Cottonwood Fire Captain Mark Ratledge, who died in the line of duty after being hit by a car on Feb. 29, 2012.
