An explosion and fire at a Redding home had neighbors jumping in to fight it with garden hoses.
Fire crews were called out on Thursday just after 1 p.m. to Neptune Terrace near Victor Ave.
The Redding Fire Department received calls of an explosion at the home, and neighbors responded instantly to help.
“Me and my dad ran and got the hoses from three houses, including the one on fire, and just started hosing it down until the fire department showed up," said neighbor Erik Withers.
Fire officials said the first firefighters to arrive on the scene saw smoke and fire through the front windows.
They jumped in – along with additional crews – and also cut a hole in the roof to vent out smoke.
While the firefighters do this for a living and have the proper training, it was not easy for the neighbors.
"It was scary! How can you fight fire if you don't have the equipment? We did the best we could,” said neighbor Beth Smith.
Nobody was inside, and there were no reported injuries.
Investigators are still investigating the cause.
