REDDING, Calif. -

A select group of Shasta County jail inmates will be released to enroll at Shasta College.

Undersheriff Sheila Ashmun outlined Shasta Technical Education Program-Unified Partnership (STEP UP)  to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning.

A collaborative effort between the Sheriff's Office, the Probation Department and Shasta College, STEP UP will allow 20-25 hand-picked inmates to enroll in one year certification programs in heavy equipment operation, automotive technology and office administration.

The inmates will be monitored by both the Sheriff's Department and Shasta College security. Jail Commander Anthony Bertain said it is a rare opportunity for the inmates, who will be on the "honor system."

Once the inmates are trained, they will get help in trying to find jobs. The inmates will enroll for the fall semester.
