A burglary suspect led deputies on a high speed chase through Chico before ditching his motorcycle and trying to flee near Bidwell Park.
George Ellis III, 42 of Chico, was arrested after a perimeter was set up in South Chico in the area of Centennial Avenue.
It started around 6:45 a.m. Thursday. The Butte County Sheriff's Office received a call from the Tuscan Ridge Golf Course on the Skyway reporting they had just been burglarized. The suspect left westbound on the Skyway on a motorcycle towards Chico.
Detective Ryan Gsell arrived in the area of Bruce Road and Skyway. He located a motorcycle matching the description of the suspect from the burglary. The detective tried to make a traffic stop on the motorcycle and the driver accelerated away.
According to a news release from the Butte County Sheriff's Office, the driver of the motorcycle was driving erratically through Chico, passing in double yellow lines, crossing into oncoming traffic and failing to stop at controlled intersections. When the driver of the motorcycle came to the Bidwell Park entrance, off of Centennial Avenue he was able to avoid the locked gate controlling the entrance and entered the park.
A perimeter was set up in the area and deputies started a search of the area. Citizens reported they had seen the motorcycle and the driver had tried to hide the motorcycle in the park.
While on perimeter patrol, Deputy Charles Comer located a man matching the description of the suspect. The man, George Ellis III, was arrested on outstanding warrants for burglary and possession of stolen property. Detective Gsell confirmed that Ellis was the suspect from the burglary at Tuscan Ridge Golf Course and the person that had fled from him on the motorcycle.
Ellis was also charged with burglary and possession of stolen property, arrested and booked into the Butte County Jail.
