Hundreds gather in Chico to celebrate SCOTUS rulings
CHICO, Calif. -

A rally at the Chico City Plaza drew hundreds of gay rights supporters to celebrate theĀ  Supreme Court rulings on Proposition 8 and DOMA.

Roland Vallerand and Daniel Nauman, of Cherokee, were married in 2008 during the brief period that same-sex marriages were allowed in California.

"I had tears in my eyes," Roland said about the moment he saw the news this morning. "I'm turning 70 next month and I never thought I'd see this in my lifetime."

Daniel said Wednesday's announcement amounts to something of a sea-change.

"Young people have a chance to mature in a situation where there's rights," David said, "and they have the right to get married if that's what they want to do. And it just colors everything very differently for a young person, I think."

Speakers from area gay rights groups and churches addressed the throng of sign holders and flag wavers.
