The CHP has released the name of an 81-year-old man killed in a rollover crash on Highway 299E near Ingot, east of Redding.
The man who died is 81-year-old Jerry Whetman of Bella Vista.
The accident was reported just after 8 p.m. Wednesday. The CHP said Whetman was eastbound in his 2002 Toyota Camry when he failed to negotiate a curve to the right. The car ran off the road, onto the gravel shoulder.
The sedan then crashed down a steep embankment, hitting a tree on the driver's side of the vehicle. The tree made significant intrusion into the passenger compartment. The vehicle then flipped and came to rest on its roof.
Whetman was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The Toyota sedan had to be pulled about 45 feet up the embankment.
