A Butte County jury found Olabaku Jones guilty of second-degree murder Thursday.
The jury returned the guilty verdict after a short deliberation.
Officials said Jones beat his pregnant girlfriend, Abby Tucker, to death in their Oroville home last June. Jones claimed Tucker had a seizure and fell in the shower.
On June 22, Jones' son Baku Jones Jr. came to visit his dad at his home on Spencer Avenue in Oroville around 3 a.m. He found Tucker sleeping in the couple's truck outside of their home.
Jones told his son she not allowed back in, and he was sick of being with her. Later that night around 8:15 p.m., Jones called 911 to have Tucker removed from the house, but officials said they couldn't do that.
On June 23, 2013 near 10 a.m., Jones Jr. returned to the home to get some clothes. His dad admitted to him, “I beat the s*** out of Abby."
Jones Jr. testified Monday he heard Tucker coughing and gasping for breath, but left the house.
12 hours later, Jones called his son crying asking him to come back. Jones Jr. didn’t return. Around 1:30 a.m. on June 24, Jones called 911 saying Tucker fell in the bathtub and is injured.
Police found Tucker naked on her bed unconscious and the bathroom torn up with blood everywhere. That was enough evidence for the jury to find Jones guilty.
"This was a circumstantial case,” said lead prosecutor, Kurt Worley. “We did have some direct evidence; however, the evidence was difficult. We had to build it by the circumstances of the case. The jury put it together and came back with the right conclusion."
The jury found all the special enhancements Jones is charged with to be true. Jones criminal history shows convictions since the mid 1990's of second degree robbery, sexual battery, forgery, and possession of a controlled substance.
The robbery charge qualifies as a strike under California’s three strikes law.
Jones is facing 39 years to life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for August 20when the family will have their chance to confront Jones.
