Keeping cool for less money
With temperatures hitting the triple-digits often, electricity bills tend to follow suit.
Redding Electric Utility recommends taking a few simple steps to lower Northstate electricity bills during the sweltering summer.
- Turn off lights and appliances when they are not in use, and turn off the TV if you are not watching it.
- Most of a family’s electricity bill is generated from air conditioning, so turning the temperature up by a few degrees can save about 10 percent on your entire energy bill.
- In addition, leaving electronics on when they are not needed generates heat, making the air conditioning work harder to keep your house cool.
- All these steps, in addition to small things, such as keeping south-facing blinds drawn during the hottest part of the day or getting sun shades or awnings for your windows, can save about $20-$30 a month.
