REDDING, Calif. -

Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer and that means the local lakes are about to get very busy. Even though cool temperatures and winds could make things a little a little chilly, things are still looking up at Lake Shasta and Whiskeytown Lake.

Whiskeytown Lake is very near full, and the beaches have been prepped for the weekend’s revelers.  They also are holding the annual Whiskeytown Regatta this weekend.

In addition, all the trails are open and the Waterfall Challenge – a challenge to hike to all four waterfalls in the park – is still in progress.

You can print out a guide online and track which waterfalls you go to by making a rubbing on special markers at each waterfall.

If Lake Shasta is more of your thing, the low lake levels aren’t expected to keep many people home.

The docks are out at the marinas and all that’s changed is a slightly longer walk to get to your boat.
