REDDING, Calif. -

A local 8-year-old is on a mission to raise some money for type one diabetes research.

More than 50 children are competing to design an National Hot Rod Association funny car. The winner will travel to see his or her design featured at a nationally televised event in Colorado.

Brayden Battle has type 1 diabetes himself and he said finding a cure is something that needs to be done.

Battle isn’t your typical 8-year-old boy. For the last two years he’s been riding and competing at BMX competitions.

"I have so many friends that have diabetes that I can play with and I also have a team that's Diabetes Type1 BMX," Battle said.

Battle said living with type1 diabetes is a struggle. "Its something where your pancreas does not give any insulin anymore," Battle said.

"One way is my insulin pump which I have, another one is shots which I used to do before I had insulin."

Brayden’s little brother Brennan, said he tries to help his brother anyway he can.

"If he’s feeling really low, about to pass out, I can tell mom he’s feeling low," Brennan said.

"My legs get shaky and I don't have any energy," Battle said.

To support others going through the same thing, Brayden entered the "Our Everyday Heroes" contest. Where children ages 5 to 18 compete to see their design on the NHRA funny car driven by Bob Tasca III.

Whoever gets the most donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation wins. And when asked why his design should win Brayden replied, "Because my car is the coolest and I want to have a cure for diabetes more than anyone else does.”

The competition goes till April 25. To vote for Brayden you can go to : www.FordRaceCar.jdrf.org
