REDDING, Calif. -

Five NorthState locals tried out on Tuesday for a spot in the Air Force Special Forces on Tuesday at the Shasta Family YMCA and Shasta High School.

They were all shooting for “Iron Man Standards” in their swim, run and strength training.

Those standards are 8 minutes and 45 seconds for a 500 meter swim, followed 30 minutes later by 9 minutes and 30 seconds for a mile and a half of running, then a 10 minute break, followed by 13 pull-ups, 65 sit-ups and 60 push-ups with 2 minute breaks in between – an intense workout.

This time, four of the five applicants passed the test and will be heading to either Pararescue or Combat Controller school.

Those units are similar to Navy Seals or Army Rangers in difficulty and boast about a 90 percent attrition rate.

If the candidates make it through the whole school, they will graduate in late 2014 for the Combat Controllers and mid-2015 for the Pararescuers.
