Mailing that letter will cost you a bit more in 2014

REDDING, Calif. -

Mailing a letter is about to get a little more expensive.

On Tuesday the Postal Service announced it would temporarily raise the cost of a first class stamp by three cents to 49 cents starting Jan. 26.

The Postal Service lost a lot of money during the 2008 economic downturn, because there just wasn't as much mail being sent. This price increase will help make up for those losses.

The rate increase will last no more than two years. The two years will be enough time for the postal office to recover 2.8 billion dollars.

You can buy forever stamps right now for 46 cents and still use them after the rates go up.

Bulk mail, periodicals, and package serve rates will also rise six percent.
