A Glenn County man was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after an alleged attack involving a large knife and a cane.
It happened Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. In the 3000 block of County Road J near Orland. Deputies arrested 44-year-old Gary Helton Jr. of Orland.
The victim Michael Bekstrom, 23, of Mount Shasta City, told investigators he had been at the home of Joyce Clark, when someone knocked on the door. Even after acknowledging the knock three times, no one entered so Bekstrom went to the front door and opened it.
Bekstrom opened the door and said he saw Helton standing near the porch area, about twenty feet away. He said Helton had a three-foot stick, similar to a walking cane, in one hand and a large knife, similar to a steak knife with a six-inch blade in the other hand.
Bekstrom said Helton yelled at him and pinned him against a wall holding his arm against his throat and the knife near his neck. Bekstrom said he feared for his life, and Helton told him he was going to kill him. After about thirty seconds, Helton released Bekstrom and walked away, threatening Bekstrom's father.
Bekstrom said his father had had issues with Helton in the past and was not sure if this incident was related.
Deputies contacted Helton, who lives in another mobile home on the same property. Helton was taken into custody, transported and booked into the Glenn County Jail in Willows for investigation of an assault with a deadly weapon, other than a knife, which would have caused great bodily harm, and threatening a crime with the intent to terrorize.
