Cops: Man assaulted deputy while holding baby

OROVILLE, Calif. -

A Butte County Sheriff's deputy was assaulted by three men while he was attempting to make an arrest Thursday.

According to a press release, Butte County Sheriff's Deputy Chuck Lair responded to the 2100 block of B Street in Oroville to help medical personnel with an intoxicated subject who was having difficulty breathing.

When Lair arrived he found 21-year-old Kevin O'Reilly who was refusing medical aid and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Lair attempted to arrest O'Reilly for public intoxication.

According to police when Lair tried to arrest O'Reilly his two roommates, started assaulting the deputy. One of these men was holding an infant child as he punched and kicked Lair.

The two men have been identified as 53-year-old Jimmie Clark and 67-year-old Bobby Clark, both of Oroville.

Police said that as Lair was attempting to control O'Reilly, who was resisting arrest, Jimmie and Bobby were punching and kicking him. As the struggle continued Bobby order a pit bull to attack Lair who was bit on the leg.

Deputy Lair then shot the dog and called for immediate assistance.

Additional law enforcement officers arrived and were able to arrest the three men.

Lair sustained injury to his hand, leg and head.

O’Reilly, Jimmy Clark and Bobby Clark were all arrested and booked into the Butte County Jail for resisting arrest with violence, obstructing a peace officer and felony battery on peace officer.

Jimmy Clark is also charged with child endangerment for fighting with the deputy while holding an infant.

Bobby Clark was additionally charged with assault with a deadly weapon for ordering the dog to attack the deputy.
