A Paradise man was taken by ambulance to Feather River Hospital Monday for cuts he suffered after he allegedly had to smash out a window of his burning apartment to escape the growing flames.
"Still trying to get the story straight on that," said Paradise Fire Captain Miguel Watson. "It sounds like he was inside at the time of the fire and had to break out the back window to basically rescue himself. He suffered some lacerations to his foot and his hand."
The fire on the 7000 block of the Skyway near Bille Road was reported around 2 p.m.
Neighbor Mary Jo Palmer was there as it happened and saw the victims cut hands.
"They were quite bloody," she said. "And then the neighbor grabbed the hose and the landlord grabbed a fire extinguisher and then shortly after the fire department showed up."
Palmer says the unidentified victim is in his late teens or early 20s.
The northbound lane of the Skyway was closed for some time but reopened around 3:30 p.m.
Firefighters said the good news is they were able to keep the flames from spreading.
"We saved all the contents of the garage and the attached apartment was saved also," said Captain Watson. "But unfortunately we didn't get the call soon enough, that place is a total loss."
Although he made it out with his life, Palmer said the victim was distraught by the damage and neighbors were feeling for him.
"He lost everything," she said. "He was really concerned about that. He just kept saying, 'I lost everything.' Everybody was pretty sad about the whole thing. Yeah, it's sad."
There's no estimated cost of the damage and fire investigators are still trying to determine a cause.
