A man was sentened to life in prison for killing his mother and leaving her body in a septic tank at her home in Chico.
On Thursday, Anthony Yee was sentenced to life in prison without any possibility of parole for killing his mother, 66-year-old Judith Nathan in December 2011.
Sentencing Judge Kristen Lucena repeated the details.
Yee first choked his mother, but when that didn't kill her, he hit her repeatedly over the head with a hammer and then waited for 15 minutes before she died.
He tried to cover his tracks by stuffing his mother's body into a septic tank in her yard on White Avenue
Yee could have received the death penalty for these gruesome acts, but instead accepted a plea bargain which allows him to spend the remainder of his life in prison.
Even Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey says it was difficult case.
"This is an extremely grisly and awful case of matricide," he said, "We had two this past year. They're never pretty, but this one was particularly ugly."
Ramsey said his office decided against pursuing the death penalty because Yee's psychiatric evaluation may have hurt the prosecution's chances.
Ramsey added, however, that he's satisfied that Anthony Yee will never see the outside of a prison again.
