Man who allegedly hit teen in fatal accident has history of DUI
The man accused in the hit-and-run crash in downtown Redding that killed 16-year-old Mark Vargas has a history of driving under the influence.
Vargas was riding his skateboard Friday when he was hit by a vehicle that later fled the scene. Redding police said the crash itself was Vargas' fault. But Kenneth Reed the 62-year-old allegedly behind the wheel at the time, has been in trouble with the law before.
Kenneth Reed has a history of arrests for driving under the influence. Reed has been arrested at least twice in two different jurisdictions for DUI.
In May of 2010 he was taken into custody in Sunnyvale, California and in March, Reed was pulled over by a CHP officer in Alturas and was arrested for DUI there.
Police have not said whether they believe alcohol played a role in this crash or in Reed leaving the scene. Police said they expect to submit the case to the district attorney's office to determine if and what charges could be filed.
