MLK Day commemoration held in Paradise
PARADISE, Calif. -

Martin Luther King Junior Day celebrations continued Monday night in Paradise.

About two hundred people came together for the 14th annual commemoration at the Paradise United Methodist Church.

Attendees were treated to speeches as well as songs sung by the Doin' It Justice Choir.

The night started with a candle light vigil that included about 50 people who held signs and marched down Clark Road singing civil rights songs.

It included a viewing of footage from the PBS documentary "The March" which gives an in depth view of the now infamous march on Washington more than 50 years ago.

Gary Shallenberger with the Paradise United Methodist Church says the celebration is a way of keeping the great civil rights leader's dream alive.

"We still need to build on the dream that the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior dreamt about in Washington in 1963," says Shallenberger. "We're still working on that. We're a long ways from it but we're making some progress.

The free event was sponsored by the Paradise Center for Tolerance and Nonviolence.
