A new Redding grill may not yet be officially open, but they put their burger-flipping skills towards a good cause.
It was a packed house Sunday afternoon at The Habit Burger Grill. The restaurant, located on East Cypress Avenue, will hold their grand opening Wednesday. However, they have been holding charity events at the site to benefit local organizations.
Sunday’s proceeds were split between the Darfur United Soccer Academy and the People of Progress organization.
“We want to give back to the community,” said general manager Mark Dutton. “It also allows our people to practice. So the employees benefit and the charity also benefits, obviously.”
The “Kicks and Hope” association, organized by Foothill High School graduate Rachael Rapinoe, works directly with the Darfur United Soccer Academy to teach the sport of soccer in refugee camps within the war-torn area of Darfur.
Rapinoe is a retired professional soccer player, and the sister of United States Olympic gold medalist Megan Rapinoe.
Dutton said they are using the simulated opening to better their business.
“There are a few kinks,” Dutton said. “We're working them out thanks to these people that have come in. In return, we give them 100% of the proceeds for these events.”
Proceeds from Monday’s fundraiser will be donated to One Safe Place of Shasta County.
