Northstate Hospital Battles Strokes

REDDING, Calif. -

Mercy Medical Center is holding a seminar on strokes tomorrow at the Mount Shasta Mall.

The seminar will focus on the symptoms of a stroke and how to read the warning signs of strokes.

Strokes kill about 140,000 Americans every year, and the Northstate sees slightly more on average than the rest of the country.

Officials at Mercy Medical Center said that a stroke as short as a few minutes can permanently disable someone, sometimes requiring that they receive constant care for the rest of their lives.

Some signs of a stroke include sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body and/or sudden trouble seeing from one eye.

The medical professionals told us that the best way to tell is to ask the person to smile, if one side of their face droops, to call 9-1-1 immediately.
