Old Shasta sees more copper thefts

OLD SHASTA, Calif. -

People who live in Old Shasta just west of Redding have been losing their line to the outside world fairly regularly in recent months.

Cynthia MacDonald says that since May, the AT&T cable that runs to Old Shasta has been cut at least four times by thieves stealing the cable for its copper.

Cell phone service is spotty and every time the cable is cut, people in the small community lose their phone and internet service. She said it's more than an inconvenience.

MacDonald says AT&T told her to spread the word as part of Neighborhood Watch and keeping an eye on the community. She said people who live in Old Shasta should report anything that looks suspicious on or around cables and utility poles to the Shasta County Sheriff's Department.

She also said that the last time it happened, the thieves found out that the copper cable had been replaced by fiber optic, so they got nothing.
