Oroville murder: friends remember victim, speculate on motive

Friends of a man slain early Saturday morning in Oroville remember him as a funny guy and speculate he was killed for money.
The body of 64 year-old Roger Miller was found in an alley next to the Valero Gas Station at the intersection of Feather River Boulevard and Montgomery Street early Saturday morning.
He suffered facial injuries and a laceration to his neck.
40 year-old Victor Caldera, an Oroville transient, has been arrested and booked into the Butte County Jail on an open count of murder and sits in jail awaiting arraignment. His bail is set at $1 million.
One woman in the area Sunday said Miller was like a father to her and friends we met say he was known as a funny guy who joked around a lot.
Shannon Wall, who owns 'Live Green Recycling' in the alley where Miller's body was found said he was a frequent customer of her business and she got to know him pretty well.
"He was awesome. He was like family to us. He was here every day, it was like his home," Wall said.
Police haven't released a motive for the murder but employees at the Motel 6--which Miller was known to frequent and where Caldera was arrested--speculate that Miller was killed for his Social Security check, which they say he received Friday.
When asked about that speculation, Shannon Wall agreed that's what people in the area have been saying.
"Yeah, (they're saying) that it was a robbery gone bad," Wall said. "The guy (Caldera) was actually messing with (Roger) all evening and (Roger) did get his social security check the same day so, I don't really know exactly what went down, but the guy was taunting him all evening."
Yesterday, Miller's family put up a poster and some balloons at the scene of the crime in honor of him.
Shannon Wall said she followed suit and, along with her husband, put candles out for Miller last night.
"And he's definitely loved around here....definitely," Wall said. "He didn't deserve that."
Witnesses or anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact the Oroville Police Department Investigations unit.
