The parents of Kristina Chesterman saw the man accused of killing their daughter for the first time Wednesday.
Sandra and David Chesterman drove three hours from the Bay Area to face 19-year-old Riley Hoover. They cried and hugged each other before heading into court. Hoover is charged with driving drunk, and hitting Kristina while she rode her bike.
Sandra and David Chesterman said they were angry when they saw Hoover making his way in front of the judge. They say he deserves the maximum punishment.
Police say Hoover left the scene, drove home, hit a car in the parking lot of his apartment complex, and then passed out in a chair in his apartment. They say his blood alcohol was likely around .30 at its peak.
Hoover was in court Wednesday morning to enter a plea on a series of charges that include driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run. The judge denied our request to take video of Hoover due to what he called "identity issues."
Dozens of friends and family brought pictures of Kristina into the courtroom and waved them in the air as Hoover entered.
Hoover did not visibly react.
Hoover was expected to enter a plea, but that didn't happen.
"We are still in the process of getting information from the Chico Police Department. We are putting together the investigation and the information and we just want to have that entirely put together," said Deputy District Attorney, Jennifer Bennett.
After court, the Chestermans said,"We were thinking about our daughter during the hearing and want investigators to take all the time they need to get it right."
Prosecutors revealed they are going through surveillance video that shows Hoover driving before he hit Kristina. They also revealed they believe Hoover was in a fight earlier that night.
They say the Chico Police Department is still interviewing witnesses. The District Attorney's office says they will expect to have their full report done by the end of the week.
Hoover is expected back in court on October 23.
