REDDING, Calif. -

The CHP has released the name of a pedestrian who was hit by a big rig in Redding early Wednesday morning.

The victim is Logan Davis, 22, of Eagan, Minnesota.  He is in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

The collision happened at 2:15 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near the Cypress Avenue on-ramp.

A CHP sergeant says a group of friends were drinking on the east side of the freeway in the Hilltop area when they decided to take a short cut across the freeway to get to their motel on the other side.

Two of them hopped the fence running alongside I-5.

Davis apparently ran out in front of his friend and was hit by a logging truck carrying a full load.

The CHP said Davis suffered major injuries to  his legs and head.

The crash caused the on-ramp from Cypress Ave. on to Interstate-5 to close for nearly an hour.
