CHICO, Calif. -

An 83-year-old transient man was sent to the hospital Monday morning in Chico after police said he stepped out into oncoming traffic.

83-year-old Robert Smith got hit by a pickup truck on the corner of 18th Street and Park Avenue.

Police said Smith tried crossing Park Avenue at 18th Street.  The crash shut down one lane of southbound traffic for an hour on Park Avenue.

The driver, 38-year-old Jason Hoover said he was changing from the left lane to the right lane-on Park Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets.

When Hoover saw Smith step out into the road, Hoover said he did his best to try to avoid hitting him.

"The driver of the pickup truck was looking into the sun, and he did not see the pedestrian in the roadway," said Chico Police Sgt. Rob Merrifield.  "The [Ford] Ranger pickup struck the pedestrian, and he has pretty significant injuries to his hip and right leg."

Smith was taken to Enloe Medical Center.   He was treated for several broken bones, but is expected to be okay.
