REDDING, Calif. -

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office has identified the pedestrian killed Wednesday night after being struck by a semi-truck.  The victim is 66-year-old Jon Kaiser.

Sergeant Walt Bullington of the Redding Police Department said it happened around 8:50 p.m. on Highway 273, just south of Wyndham Lane.

Bullington said the victim was found lying unconscious on the west edge of the roadway and was pronounced dead after being transported to Mercy Medical Center.

The victim was struck by a Freightliner Century Class tractor trailer, driven by 56-year-old Mark Haden of Anderson, according to police.

Haden told officers he saw the victim lying on the ground and was unable to avoid him.

Haden was examined at the scene and did not appear to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Officers said two independent witnesses saw the victim walking in the middle of the traffic lane just before he was struck.

The preliminary investigation revealed the victim was drinking alcohol and could have been intoxicated.
