BERRY CREEK, Calif. -

The Butte County Sheriff's Office is looking for the person(s) responsible for leaving a pipe bomb in rural Butte County over the weekend.

The pipe bomb was found in a sock in the bushes. It had nails and screws attached to it and was found by someone walking along Webster Road in Berry Creek. Now deputies are trying to figure out who made it, and who left it there.

"I'm totally shocked about that!" said Denise Longenbach, a woman who lived about a half a mile from where the bomb was discovered. She said she thinks it could be the result of ongoing neighborhood feuds, but admitted that those were mostly rumored.

"I don't know anything specific. I don't know anyone up here, I just keep to myself but I hear about things.  You know, somebody had their house burned down..." said Longenbach.

Cccording to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, the exact motive is still up in the air. What exactly the device was, however, the sheriff's office knows for sure.

"They rendered it safe and firing a blast into it. Once they did that, it opened up and they determined it contained [gun] powder," said Undersheriff Kory Honea.

Sheriff's deputies said they believe someone tried to set off the device.

"They attempted to light the fuse, perhaps trying to ignite it.  It must have not have worked and left it on the side of the road," said Honea.

On Monday, investigators revealed the bomb could have caused some serious damage.

"The shrapnel from the broken pipe.  It could be deadly as well as, the shrapnel from the nails that were attached to it," said Honea.

The sheriff's office also revealed that rust was found on the nails and screws -- meaning that bomb could have been there for quite some time.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office asks the public that if they have any information, they give them a call.
