REDDING, Calif. -

A Cottonwood man was arrested late Wednesday night after police say he broke into a car in the Movies 14 parking lot in Redding.

Employees at Movies 14  on Old Alturas Road called police after finding a car in the parking lot with a smashed window.  They reported the car burglary around 11:15 p.m, and officers responded.  A witness reported seeing a man running away across the street.

The owner of the car reported a bat bag containing $600 in softball equipment was missing.

Police stopped Derreck Lancaster, 23 of Cottonwood, a short time later.  He was carrying a bag matching the description of the stolen bat bag.

Police said he confessed to breaking into the vehicle and taking the items.  He was arrested for burglary and possession of stolen property.
