Public input sought on downtown bike lanes

Caltrans and the City of Redding are seeking public input on a plan to add bike lanes to portions of California and Pine Streets downtown.
The two parties met on Wednesday and came up with a proposal that would narrow lanes on Pine and eliminate a lane on California, allowing for the addition of a bike lane to each.
But, before they make any final decisions, they will hold a public open house to see what residents think.
It will be held Thursday, June 5 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Redding City Hall.
Caltrans wants to nail down its plan soon because already-scheduled paving work in the area is set to begin June 9.
Regardless of what they decide, the cost of the project will be the same, since new striping has to be laid down anyway.
Officials say traffic impact will be minimal if the addition of the bike lanes becomes reality.
