Red Bluff, Calif. -

Red Bluff is holding a firefighting academy to bolster the ranks of the fire department.

The Red Bluff Fire Department has been hit hard in the past by budget cuts and through this academy they hope to increase their numbers and keep full time firefighters in Red Bluff.

It starts in January and will teach students the basic fundamentals of firefighting both in wildland and urban settings.

Graduates will receive a Firefighter One certificate after one year’s service with the Red Bluff Fire Department.

Captain Dom Catona says, that most of the full time fire fighters in the Department have gone through this academy.

The department provides all the equipment required for completing the course, excluding gym shorts for conditioning exercises.

The course costs just $300, compared to other courses which can cost as much as $4,000 in Sacramento according to the California Fire and Rescue Training Authority.

The course will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and all day on Saturday starting Jan. 4, and running through May of 2014.
