Red Cross strained by wildfires

REDDING, Calif. -

The American Red Cross can be a savior in the Northstate during fire season.

So far this year the fires have mostly left the Northstate alone, but the Red Cross is still feeling the strain from the other fires out there.

Last year there were 11 shelters open, some with more than 100 occupants.  This year, though, there are only two shelters in the Northstate.  And those are on standby due to the Salmon and Corral complex fires.

Resources are being described as stretched but officials say they could handle more if the situation warrants.

The biggest challenge is getting the man power on location to staff the shelters.

The Red Cross is mostly volunteer supported, so they can’t just assign anyone to a certain location.
