Redding City Council moves to increase utility rates

REDDING, Calif. -

Redding’s City Council approved a utilities rate hike earlier this year – the first rate hike since 2011.

Waste, water and trash collection will be affected by this rate increase. But the city said that the customers have the final word.

The City Council can’t just outright approve a rate increase. Instead, they must put it to a vote, giving Redding citizens the final word on whether or not the increase will pass.

The increase in rates will help pay for construction costs, mostly for maintenance on facilities and replacing and repairing old pipes – some of which are over 100 years old.

The increase ranges from 3 percent per year for trash collection, to 7 percent per year for water.

City Council is sending out protest ballots to customers to get a vote for or against the increase.
