Redding filmmaker launches Kickstarter Campaign

Published On: Feb 25 2014 02:47:53 AM CST

A Redding filmmaker needs the community’s support to create his latest Science-Fiction themed short film.

Daniel Nichols launched a campaign Friday on the popular fundraising site Kickstarter. The 24-year-old said the support will not just be for his project; it will also help out the entire Northstate film industry.

Daniel needs to raise $10,000.00 by March 23, 2014 in order to make his film, Sands of Ikkera. He’s hoping the community shares his vision.

“We felt it was something people would enjoy getting behind,” said Daniel.

This is also a goal Daniel shares with his wife, Rachel Nichols; this would be their third film together. The two co-wrote the film and dedicate all their free time towards the project.

“I love working with my wife,” said Daniel.

They received a lot of support from local filmmakers, so they know an investment in them is also an investment in the Northstate.

“Our heart is to make films and help other people make films,” said Daniel.

The Nichols plan to buy new equipment with the money from the Kickstarter campaign. They also plan to share it with other local filmmakers.

“It has been really cool to meet all the people that want to do filmmaking and just be here up in Northern California,” said Daniel.

He said being a filmmaker in a smaller town has its perks.

“Tighter community, having more people support you and more people you kind of know, you have more recognition about the films that you are doing compared to LA where so many people that go down there and want to be filmmakers,” said Daniel.

If they don’t raise the full $10,000.00 by the end of the campaign, they wouldn’t see a dime. It’s a risk Daniel and his wife are willing to take.

“They’ve had a higher success rate with projects compared to other websites,” said Daniel.

Daniel said regardless of how the campaign turns out, he and his wife are just at the beginning of their filmmaking career.

“We’ll do film no matter what so if that’s on our own money then it’s what we’re doing, it’s what we love to, do,” said Daniel.
