Bishop Jaime Soto was the bishop for Uriel Ojeda, a former Redding priest who was recently sentenced to eight years in prison for committing lewd acts with a girl who was 13 years old at the time.
The lewd acts started when Ojeda was working in Sacramento and continued when he was transferred to a church in Redding. Until almost 20 months ago, when the girl's father reported it. Ojeda agreed to return to Sacramento to turn himself in.
Ojeda apologized to the girl and her family before he was sentenced but Bishop Soto said the pain to the girl, to her family and to the church does not just go away.
Bishop Soto said that as a fellow priest, he felt betrayed by what Ojeda did.
And while some parishioners have defended the charismatic, popular priest, Soto said he was clearly an abuser.
