REDDING, Calif. -

The City of Redding is trying something different when it comes to getting rid of used batteries.

Redding residents can now get rid of their used batteries using special orange bags.

The process is simple -- all people need to do is pick up one of the bags, put their used household batteries inside, then drop the bags into their blue curbside recycling bin.

"Batteries don't belong in your garbage, they’ve been banned from the landfill," said Public Works Supervisor for Redding Municipal Utilities Christina Piles. "They have a lot of toxic metals in [them]."

Piles said that Redding Municipal Utilities does recycle batteries at the transfer station but it’s not always convenient for people to come all the way out there to do that.

There is no limit on how many bags someone can take but it is important to remember to fill the bags half-way, to not over fill them and to make sure they are sealed tightly.

Bags are available at the following locations:

  • City Hall 777 Cypress Ave., volunteer desk in the front lobby
  • City of Redding Transfer Station 2255 Abernathy Lane
  • Lowe's 1200 E. Cypress Ave.
  • Tops Fresh Market 3685 Eureka Way
