REDDING, Calif. -

This week, Cal Vet will mail more than 600 applications for the Redding veterans home, which could soon see some new residents.

The new state budget, passed by the state legislature and sent to the governor, includes funding for the home.

The veterans home in Redding will offer residential care for the elderly and skilled nursing care.

Veterans who are age 55 of older are eligible to apply for admission.

The age requirement is waived for disabled or homeless veterans needing long-term care.

Cal Vet Assistant Hospital Administrator Linda Hartman said there are other factors that could put someone on the priority list.

“Medal of Honor recipients have the highest priority, then it’s also based in needs – health need, financial need, homelessness,” said Hartman.

The California Department of Veterans affairs has also begun hiring staff to work at the facility. The home will have 150 beds.
