MODOC COUNTY, Calif. -

A U.S. Forest Service Smokejumper was killed while fighting a lightning fire in the South Warner Wilderness area on Monday afternoon, according to the Modoc County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the 28-year-old Smokejumper Luke Sheehy was fighting the Saddle Back Fire in the South Warner Wilderness area about 15 miles southeast of Alturas. He had jumped into the area with two colleagues to battle the fire, when a tree limb fell more than 60 feet, striking him in the head.

Responders attempted to resuscitate Sheehy at the scene and he was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Alturas where he was pronounced dead.

Sheehy was from Susanville and based in Redding.
