REDDING, Calif. -

Redding said hello to its first baby of 2014.

Diesel Madrone Ito was born at 4:21 a.m. Wednesday morning, Jan. 1. Parents Katrina and Joshua Ito were thrilled to welcome their first child into the world.

Diesel weighs 8 pounds, 7 ounces and is 19.75 inches long. He was born with a fighter’s mentality to be the number one baby at Mercy Medical Center.

His mother, Katrina, said the timing came as a surprise.

“It was surreal. I mean, when [midnight] came and went I didn't think it was going to happen,” said Katrina. “When they came in and told us, I was like that's pretty awesome.”

Katrina said she was in labor for more than 19 hours. The Ito family lives in Weaverville so it took an hour-long car ride to get to Redding. The boy’s father, Joshua, said they had the car-seat loaded up for weeks now.

The family said they were on pins and needles waiting for their New Year's Day surprise to arrive.

“I'm just glad he wasn't a Christmas baby,” Katrina said. “I mean, everyone's on vacation, and the whole Christmas thing. At least when he's older he'll appreciate having a New Year's birthday."
