Redding's same-sex marriage supporters celebrate Supreme Court decision

REDDING, Calif. -

Marriage equality supporters celebrated in Shasta County on Wednesday.

The United States Supreme Court has cleared the way for same-sex marriage in California by holding that defenders of California's gay marriage ban did not have the right to appeal lower court rulings striking down the ban.

Justices also declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.

Noise-makers, signs, flags, and music were all part of the celebration. Supporters lined the end of the Market Street Promenade, in front of the Shasta County Clerk's office.

County Clerk Cathy Darling Allen said that the county is playing a "waiting game" when it comes to getting licenses issued. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals still has to lift its stay on same-sex marriages.

However, the stay did not stop supporters from sharing their excitement.

"We have been getting a lot of thumbs up from the supporters driving by,” said Danielle Brewster. “We are definitely getting an awesome, supportive reaction. I think that's just because people want equality."

There were no opponents of same-sex marriage at Wednesday’s rally.
