Sculpture Dedicated In Redding Today

Men and women gather for the dedication of a new sculpture at the Redding Library.

REDDING, Calif. -

A new piece of public art was dedicated at the Redding Public Library.

Jim Phillips created a new sculpture; it's made of concrete in three separate pieces, not including the base.

It's near the entrance to the Redding Library, and is Phillips second piece there.

Phillips went to the City of Redding to get the project approved.

He says the sculpture represents a theme about how the library interacts with a community.

"The idea was, what does a library do for the members of the community, and the title of this one is Points of Departure. The concept was that the library provides a point of departure for the people that use it."

Redding Mayor Rick Bosetti was there, and shared a few words before Phillips explained the concept.

Phillips wasn't the only person involved in creating the new piece.

Fellow artist John Martin-Streeby collaborated with him, and several local businesses contributed to making the sculpture happen.
