One person was airlifted and as many as a dozen were injured Saturday night after a deck collapsed in Butte County.
The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. at the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve, off Highway 32, about 14 miles east of Chico.
The facility is operated by Chico State University.
According to information from CAL FIRE dispatch one person suffered major injuries, two people suffered moderate injuries and one person suffered minor injuries.
All told, five people were taken to the hospital, one by air ambulance and four by ground.
As many as seven others suffered scrapes and bruises that didn't require further medical attention.
According to Scott Huber, who runs the Ecological Reserve but wasn't there at the time, the Northern California Chapter of Audubon California held a meeting at the reserve Saturday when the accident happened.
"My understanding was that they were taking a photo, after their conference, out on the back deck," Huber says. "I rushed up, there were about three fire engines and about five EMTs here. They were stabilizing some people that were laying below the deck."
There is no word yet as to what caused the deck to collapse.
