Sharing is caring for this Redding couple
A Redding couple is calling it a miracle, right on time. Steve and Karina Polk have been married for 11 years. The last three years have been tough due to Steven’s kidney failure.
Steve said he knew this was coming because kidney failure runs in his family. Steve said he knew he would need a transplant but he never thought his wife would also be his match.
"I was ecstatic,” said Karina Polk about finding out she was a match. “I said 'I’m a match, I’m a match! Were good to go!'"
"I just couldn't believe it because it seemed so surreal that it had been this long. The only thing I could imagine was being healthy again." said Steve.
Steve Polk started dialysis at the age of 28 when he found out his kidneys were failing. After three years of dialysis and not being able to work he couldn't take it and the strain was affecting his family.
"I had to keep the kids happy, take them to sporting events and then come home and dialyze him, it was hard," said Karina Polk.
The Polks said the average wait time for a kidney is about six years, and matches between couples are not common.
"Without my wife’s help I don't know if I would have made it as far as I did," said Steve.
On Nov. 6 the Polks had their prayers answered, they went into surgery without any problems.
For the first time in a long time Steve was able to eat regular meals. Steve also said the transplant did something for his relationship.
"I feel so connected to my wife, for a perfectly healthy person to go under huge massive surgery to help me that's true love right there."
